Cooking on a Shoestring on Facebook Live

WAC has had a lovely write-up on Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF)’s website!

CCF recently funded us for an 8-week course in which participants received deliveries of ingredients, then followed along with a video cook-along on Facebook Live.

WAC CEO Lizzie Sullivan says, “Thank you so much for the Cornwall Emergency Appeal funding. With the £3,000 that you sent us we have run 8 workshops, where we are getting the ingredients and the recipes delivered to families and households in our locality. Some of the families are very vulnerable and it’s heartening to hear how grateful they are to have the contact, the food and the activities. An unexpected positive change was how, almost every member of the family got involved with the cooking when initially one member of a family expressed a desire to join in.”

Cornish Charcuterie for Carers!

Our Cornwall Rural Community Charity Carers’ Wellbeing days continued today with some delicious Cornish charcuterie, cheeses and olives, accompanied by salads and lovely crusty bread.

The spread got rave reviews from all of our carers. Chef Emma sourced the cheeses and meats from The Cornish Food Box and The Great Cornish Food Store, and it was all wonderful.

Next week, our carers will be back for an afternoon tea … with a twist!

WAC Policy on the Coronavirus

WAC is open for business as usual. Should things change, we’ll let you know either here or on our Facebook page.

In the meantime, please continue to be sensibly cautious! Washing your hands frequently is the best way to keep yourself safe.

If someone you know is self-isolating, please keep in touch with them by phone and email. We don’t want people feeling cut off or alone.

A Special Honour for a Special Person

Helen is pictured with Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall Col Edward Bolitho OBE (left) and Glyn Williams of Cornwall Council (right)

At an awards ceremony held at the Eden Project last Thursday, WAC volunteer Helen Balmont was commended by Volunteer Cornwall for the impact her work has had on our organisation over the past year.

Helen came to WAC as a participant on one of our Who Dares Works courses, and loved us so much that she never left! She now works as a valued volunteer in the kitchen, sharing her skills and knowledge. She leads others and is an invaluable member of the WAC team. We count her as a friend as well as a colleague.

The recognition Helen received from Volunteer Cornwall was well-deserved, but it only served to confirm we at WAC already knew: She is a superstar.

A Lunch for Some Very Special Carers

We held a fantastic tapas lunch today for some very special carers.

Funded by Cornwall Rural Community Charity, the lunch was made by chef Emma and was appreciated by all who came!

Emma’s fabulous menu included crostini with smoked mackerel pate and pickled cucumber, chili beef and smoked cheddar empanadas, cold Spanish meats and olives, Manchego and membrillo, Albondigas with a spicy tomato sauce, chicken and chorizo skewers with aioli, mushroom aranncini and patatas bravas. As if that wasn’t enough, it was all washed down with mock sangria and finished off with choux buns in a chilli chocolate dipping sauce.

All these wonderful carers were so deserving of a special treat, and we hope we did them proud.

Cookery Course Graduates

Chef Emma demonstrates

Our resident chef, Emma Adams, finished teaching a six-week cookery course yesterday. The course, funded by Great Western Rail, involved teaching participants an array of useful techniques.

Over the six weeks, the students took on knife skills, fish filleting, boning chickens, making sauces, bread baking and pasta making.

It was a brilliant course and all the participants loved it!
